We stopped updating this site on June 30, 2024. From now on, information on Educational Campus-wide Computing System (ECCS) will be provided at utelecon The Portal Site of Information Systems @ UTokyo.
FAQs on the Chromebox terminal are provided on this page. There are questions that we think people may ask in addition to actual questions.
Q. Are you going to change all ECCS terminals to the ChromeOS terminals in the next change for the ECCS
A. Each university has been trying to find out what the educational computing system for the university should be in the future. Some universities have already made the full transition to a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) system where students are required to bring their own device to the university. A decision was made to introduce the experimental ChromeOS system as terminals oriented for the server-side computing to complement transition to a BYOD system. However, it is unlikely that lectures will be given using only ChromeOS terminals by the time we upgrading the ECCS in 2020. However, there is still time for assessments and procurement to upgrade the next ECCS, and it is likely that ChromeOS terminals will be just introduced as part of the whole system.

As mentioned in the above, introducing the ChromeOS terminals is currently a part of the whole system. Please refer to the Availability and Bookings (available only in Japanese) for the latest installed locations and the number of ChromeOS terminals.
Q. It is more useful if it can be used with Gmail accounts as well as the ECCS Cloud Email accounts.
A. It has been set up so that only people with the right to use ECCS can use this as the ChromeBooks are part of the facilities of the university. Please refer to "How to use ECCS Cloud Email -Initial settings, etc.- for the details on how to use it.
Q. Are ECCS multifunction printers available?
A. You cannot send a print job directly from Chromebox terminals to ECCS multifunction printers. However, the web upload printing and printing with USB flash drive are available. For more information, please see “Printing” on the ECCS website.
Q. I accessed the Google Play Store from the Chromebox terminal to try to install Android software. However, I could search a limited number of software, and could not install the target software. Can I install this free software because it is required for my course work?
A. ChromeOS managed by the domain of educational institution can only search/install Android software which has been pre-approved by the organization. If you apply for the use of free software required for your course work from “Google Play Store Apps for ChromeOS“ form(login with your ECCS Cloud Email(xxxxx@g.ecc.u-tokyo.ac.jp) is required), it may be added to the approval list.
