Next generation of Educational Campus-wide Computing System (ECCS2021)
News
Updated: February 16, 2021
December 24, 2020
The bids were opened on September 11, 2020, and Fujitsu Limited was awarded the tender for ECCS2021.
Terminals
- 21.5-inch Apple iMac (the number of iMac: 751), Mac mini (the number of Mac mini:507)
- Both macOS Catalina (10.15) and Microsoft Windows 10 will be available
- Intel Core i3 3.6GHz Quad-core
- 16GB memory
- SSD 512GB
- iMac: 4,096 by 2,304 pixels, 21.5-inch display.
Mac Mini:1,920 by 1,024 pixels, 27-inch display (some will be 23.8-inch displays, depending on the location)
- Magic Keyboard (JIS keyboards without numeric keyboards)
- 3 button laser sensor mouse with scroll wheel (Elecom M-S2ULBK/RS)
Differences from the current system
- The number of terminals will be reduced (from 1,341 to 1,258), however, the Chrome OS terminals, which were separately procured, will also be installed. Please see the plan for the terminal and printer installation for details on the number of terminals to be installed in each room.
- ECCS consisting of iMac only will be changed to the system consisting of iMac and Mac mini. The external displays, keyboards and mouse for the Mac minis will be available for use with your own personal computer through a KVM switch.
- CPU speed will be increased (from Core i5 2.8GHz to Core i3 3.6GHz)
- Numeric keyboards are no longer available.
Software
- Programming Languages
- C/C++, Java, Ruby, Python3 will be available on both Mac and Windows. Fortran will be available on Mac only
- Data Analysis
- JMP will be available on both Mac and Windows
- Numerical Computing
- Mathematica will be available on both Mac and Windows
- Numerical Analysis
- MATLAB will be available on both Mac and Windows
- CAD
- Inventor Professional, 3ds max will be available on Windows
- Office Application
- Ms-Office will be available on both Mac and Windows
- Anti-virus
- Sophos Central Intercept X Endpoint Advanced will be available on Mac
- Windows Defender will be available on Windows
- Unix
- The same Unix free software as the current condition will be provided on Mac as much as possible
- Software provided at the expense of specific departments
- We will discuss with other departments about TSP, Rhinoceros and Stata which are currently introduced at their expense.
Differences from the current system
- Change of anti-virus software
Printer
- RICOH IM C3500 x 14, RICOH IM C3000 x 11
- Scan and copy functions will be available
- Available paper sizes: B4, B5, A3, A4
- Payment methods available: pre-paid card and e-money card (Suica, PASMO)
- Files such as PDF, TIFF, JPEG, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, saved on memory cards can be printed
- There are two methods where you can print outside the system. One is IPP printing (available only on Windows) and the other allows you to print by uploading files after authentication via web interface.
Differences from the current system
- The number of printers will be reduced (from 29 to 25)
- The payment method of using pre-paid card and e-money card will be continued, and the current pre-paid card (provided by RICOH) will be available continuously.
Remote access system
- System that enables the use of a GUI environment of Mac OS X using Splashtop Enterprise from outside the system will be introduced
- 15 users will be able to use the system simultaneously
- There are Windows, Mac and iOS versions available for free as client software
- Three Mac OS X server machines using SSH will be available
- The restrictions for the public keys which are available on the ssh server will be changed to higher than RSA2 2048 bit and ECDSA 256 bit. If the public key used in the ssh server for ECCS2016 does not meet these restrictions, you are required to re-register a new public key for ECCS2021(it is possible to re-register remotely).
- Remote access for Windows is not offered due to license restrictions
Differences from the current system
File transfer server
- A server for accessing the system home directory from outside the system via WebDAV
- Software is North Grid Proself Enterprise Edition
- Available to 400 users simultaneously
Differences from the current system
- The WebDAV server for Windows environment and the WebDAV server for Mac environment each will have different host names, and users will be able to select and connect either one (with the current system, if you access using one host name, you will be automatically assigned to either of the servers).
File server
- The main server is ETERNUS NR1000 A400, the backup server is ETERNUS NR1000 F2750
- Effective capacity 71TB
- The main server disk is SSD only
Differences from the current system
- Expected to improve access speed by using SSDs for all main server disks
- The effective capacity is less than half that of the current system (179TB), but this is because in the current system the file server also provided a spool for the mail server in the current system. We plan to limit the capacity of the user home directory to the same level as the current system.
Email system
Differences from the current system
- The email system is not included in this system as it has been migrated to ECCS Cloud Email (G Suite for Education) including the Mail Hosting System.
Network devices
- Core switches are Catalyst 9500 and Catalyst 9402R
- Edge switch is Catalyst 9200L
- Internet connections using Palo Alto Networks PA-3250 by NAT
Differences from the current system
- Increased connections at 10 Gbps
Devices for presenting teaching material
Differences from the current system
- Purchase of the current system (ECCS2016) and continue to use it
Transition schedule from the current ECCS2016
- Terminals
- Remove the current terminals sequentially from February 2021
- Start trial operation on March 1, 2021
- Start full operation in April 2021
- File servers
- Move data from the old file server to the new file server
- Due to copying, neither the old file server nor the new file server may be used for about a week.
- It is undecided whether to migrate the home directory as it is or to make it in another directory.
